AtomKraft

AtomKraft

AtomKraft is a complete 3D look-development, Lighting and Rendering solution for the high-end 2D/3D compositing application Nuke.

AtomKraft is the first real integration of a 3rd party renderer into Nuke. It is also the first application to allow artists to tap into visual compositing of RenderMan co-shader networks, via Nuke’s graph editor.

Introduction

AtomKraft is a powerful alternative to Nuke’s Scanline Render node and, in general, to Nuke’s 3D framework. It supports the complete functionality of the ScanlineRender node and adds additional features like:

  • Global illumination (ray-traced, point-based, or a mix of both)
  • Hybrid Ray-Tracing/REYES rendering
  • Stereo/Multi-camera rendering (with Ocula support)
  • Advanced physical-plausible materials & lights
  • Image-based and point-based HDR lighting
  • Import of animated geometry (RIB/OBJ/GEO/BGEO) with deformation motion blur and weighted motion re-targeting
  • Sub-pixel displacement
  • Fast, true, 3D motion blur with unlimited motion segments
  • Fast, true, 3D depth of field
  • Arbitrary RSL2.0 evaluation on Nuke pixels via Atomizer (allowing e.g. full 2.5D relighting)
  • Loading of compiled shade-trees from 3Delight for Maya, 3Delight for Softimage
  • Loading of compiled RSL custom shaders
  • Toon shading & ink outlines tuned for Japanese-style animé rendering
  • All components of the shading, like specular, diffuse, indirect diffuse, etc. are available as separate output channels (AOVs)
  • Support of per-light and per-object output channels (AOVs)

AtomKraft ships with an extensive set of helper nodes for look development, advanced lighting and custom geometry input. It is designed to easily act as a drop-in replacement for Nuke’s ScanlineRender and easily import data from Maya, Houdini and Softimage.

AtomKraft turns Nuke into a complete look development lighting & rendering solution that enables studios to alleviate the use of 3D packages for this part of the production pipeline. It empowers compositors to make changes to renders themselves instead of relying on a lighting TD. But what’s more — it even allows them to do the work of a lighting TD — all from inside Nuke.

Under the hood

Under the Hood AtomKraft interfaces with DNA Research’s 3Delight high-end, RenderMan–compliant, offline rendering engine. Used for major VFX sequences on movies like District 9, Terminator: Salvation, X-Men Origins: Wolverine and countless others, 3Delight offers the highest quality & speed. The integrated version was specifically designed in conjunction with /*jupiter jazz*/ to make AtomKraft possible.
Each AtomKraft license includes 3Delight, supporting unlimited cores/threads on a single host. This version of 3Delight works solely inside Nuke.

AtomKraft Studio

AtomKraft Studio
A Studio version of AtomKraft that interfaces with other RenderMan compliant renderers, e.g. Pixar’s PhotoRealistic RenderMan or SitexgraphicsAIR, is being developed in parallel.
AtomKraft Studio adds the following features:
  • Instant one-click switching between RenderMan rendering engines
  • Full RIB import/export
  • Launching of external standalone renderer
  • Particle import, procedural expansion & rendering
  • Simulation import from selected simulation softwares

AtomKraft Studio is being developed in parallel with AtomKraft and it’s planned for release shortly after AtomKraft.

    Atomizer

    Atomizer

Atomizer is a separate plugin that can work independently from AtomKraft. It provides 2.5D relighting capabilities at a fraction of the cost of AtomKraft. It is embedded in AtomKraft and AtomKraft Studio.
